5-Alive
In Nakuru and Narok, young people and queers are stigmatized, out of stock and fearful of seeking HIV treatment daily. 5-Alive is transforming this by training health workers, assisting peer educators, and reconnecting patients to care. So far, with the collaboration of Mama Hope, we have already assisted 289 individuals in re-entering treatment with 17 additional individuals in 2025 alone with one $500 gift. This progress will continue only when supported by you.
Who We Are
5-Alive is a community based organization that operates in Nakuru and Narok counties in Kenya and is grassrooted. Our target clients are queer youths, female sex workers, young mothers, and other marginalized populations with HIV. We move to eliminate obstacles to life-saving treatment through training of health workers, facilitating peer educators and ensuring stigma free environment where all people are given a chance of accessing treatment with dignity.
Our Journey
Established during the COVID-19 pandemic, 5-Alive was a small support group that assists marginalized individuals with HIV to safely obtain medication. We have the status of a registered community-based organization in 2023. Our operations have expanded to include collaboration with health institutions and Mama Hope to address coverage gaps in HIV care on a low budget of under one-fifteen thousand dollars per year.
Impact
-
12 workshops in 2023, including 280+ colleagues and health professionals.
-
In 2023, 272 young and queer people became re-linked to HIV care again; by April 2025, this figure increased to 289 with an extra contribution of 500.
-
After sensitivity trainings, stigma complaints at Nakuru Provincial General Hospital have reduced.
-
PGH showed a decrease of almost 50 per cent in the turnaround time of diagnosing patients and improved timeliness in treatment.
-
The uptake of HIV services in Nakuru has now reached nearly 99 percent of the people diagnosed whereas Narok still remains a priority area with close to half of the individuals yet to be treated.
Why It Matters
The lack of privacy, stigma, long queues and stock-outs drive vulnerable individuals out of care. Harassment and discrimination increase the risks of the queer clients. Each training, each peer supported and each clinic supplied, saves another life and another family to HIV.
